I played the video game since I was working at a comic book store when I was 10 years old back in 1990.  I was always referred as Ryu because I played the character a lot, and my ethnicity is mixed, white with asian heritage.  I have practiced the martial arts for over 15 years of my life and just recently got into cosplay. I looked at all the current Ryu cosplayers, and one thing I saw is that the people did not know how to tie martial arts belts, and did not perform the moves, so I wanted to stay true to the character as much as possible.
